No costly surprises in walking through either of my renovation projects this morning. When you dive into extensive remodel work on buildings 100-150 years old, you take each site visit with fingers crossed....

Still the usual supply of "Why the hell did they build it _that_ way?" moments.

I'd like to write a disseration on the matter one of these years. Think I could get MIT or Harvard to fund me?

No, it's not just old houses. Our house is about 30 years old? Well, the windows leak during hurricanes. What do you expect? They're 30 years old. Can you buy new weatherstripping? Nope. Now, we can buy all new windows, but the sizes are all made differently now so we'd have to redo the wood openings for every window. You like these toilets? They don't make the gaskets anymore. This dishwasher we have is 10 years old now. They don't make parts for it anymore. Enforced consumerism.
