A male cardinal came by to try and figure out* the tube sunflower feeder this morning. A _bald_ male cardinal. No crest, no feathers on the head at all. Black skin.

I don't know if this is a regular molt, or whether he's hen-pecked, or has mange, or what. Definitely pitiful, like a squirrel trying to cuss without a tail.

In other news, the buttercups are blooming in the lawn again, taking over from those white violets I mentioned earlier. Now I can swing into my annual rendition of perverted Gilbert and Sullivan: "So I mowed little Buttercup, dear little Buttercup...."

That assumes that the mower works the next time I try it.

*For some reason, cardinals can't seem to bend right or perch right for the tube feeders. Grackles and blue jays can contort themselves enough to get some seeds, even though they're larger.

It's both. *g* "A simile is a metaphor using 'like' or 'as'."
