As a solar physicist, my usual experience with press interviews is that they inevitably mistake a bit of background (the Sun doesn't rotate as a solid body) for the news, which resulted in two different pieces of research, several years and an ocean apart, being headlined as 'Scientists surprised to find the Sun rotates at various speeds' or words to that effect. But that was national/international, not local, and it may have a lot to do with young scientists not being trained to talk to the press. (And the people that big insitutions employ to do that generally manage to mangle the science ...)
