Papers, Comrade!

We just finished up the passport applications.  Grump.

I wonder how long until we need them for internal travel.  Homeland inSecurity has been threatening to disallow Maine driver's licenses as federal ID for several years now . . .

At least the sun has come out.

in the UK older driving licenses don't have a photo - so since you need photo ID to board even an internal flight (ever since 11/9/01), some people need a passport to fly internally.

We've had photo ID driver's licenses for decades. The Feds don't like Maine's, because the state hasn't required proof of legal residence until this last year. Sort of, you know, figured it was proof of ability to meet a legal minimum capability to drive? Pass the test, get a license?

Next time we need to renew, we'll have to take birth certificates along. Even so, the state doesn't meet the Federal "Real ID" standards and is operating under a waiver.

Just wait until you have the official ones and they don't work for some reason and you are detained forever...

We're gonna keep 'em wrapped in aluminum foil. Blocks those orbital mind-control lasers, so it should work on RFID . . .

I understand Floridians have to go through border checkpoints driving north from the Keys.

We live in the "Constitution-free Zone", as no part of Maine is more than a hundred miles from either the coast or border. INS, La Migra whatever they call themselves now, sets up roadblocks on the Interstate.

Same with Illinois. I took my passport along the last few times I flew, just in case.

I haven't heard much about a national ID or drivers license tweakage since the new administration took over, so I don't know where it stands.

I think the Maine Legislature has passed a resolution specifically rejecting "Real ID" as a Work of Satan . . .
