My attitude towards "consumer credit" was bent long ago by my parents and reinforced by Wife's parents.  See, my folks graduated from college into the teeth of the Depression, and Wife's parents, ten years younger, went forth into the cold, cruel world at the start of WWII.

Neither family had any basis to believe that money would exist next week that you didn't already have in hand.  Even money you'd already earned might never come through, or money you'd been paid and put in the bank might vanish . . . .

Warps your attitude profoundly, that does.  Even passes on to your children.

And even your grandchildren. My grandfather, having been paid by many of his customers at the end of tobacco auction season, put $800 1932-dollars into the bank the week before it closed..forever. Nobody in the family has ever forgotten this.
