At least it's warm out there, temperature in the 50s F when I walked over to fetch our newspaper.

My daughter arrived home at 3:45, having been kicked out of her rental room. Last night's fire had gotten within three blocks. Those are old ramshackle homes, all wood frame timber, sigh. And all those beautiful old California Black Oak...

Oh, damn. I hope her place survives . . .

I think the black oaks have a certain amount of fire tolerance -- the plains versions have thick bark, to survive prairie fires. Don't know if "fire suppression" has allowed too much fuel to build up for that.
