Friday roadkill report
Oct. 24th, 2008 02:59 pmA couple of flat garter snakes. That's all. They probably thought they'd found this nice warm rock in the sun . . .
Roadkill retrospective:
Since this may well be the last bike ride of the season, I summarize the survey. Less total roadkill than in past years, higher percentage of porcupines (although that may represent preferential scavenging of less-pointy snacks), considerably lower percentage of skunks. Raccoons, woodchucks, muskrats, and UFOs represented in about normal proportions. One 'possum, first ever. No deer.
Temperature soared above 50 F and the wind stayed down, so I added my green fuzzy to the bike attire and headed out. Many trees now bare. Some asters still blooming, milkweed pods exploding in fluff, most of the tamaracks turned to gold. Windrows of acorns under some oaks -- expect to see bloated squirrels hauling themselves slowly across the grass to sanctuary. Falling out of trees. Whatever.
May get another ride in, may not. Time to start considering whether the world owes me a new pair of skis for the winter.
15.32 miles, 1:12:23
1314 odometer miles for the year, something over 100 hours on the two bikes.
