Forgot to mention that today is the start of "moose season" in Maine.

And unlike "tourist season", yes, we can*  shoot them . . .

My dad always told me that you shot your moose in spring when it was eating the new grass and such, rather than fall, when it had been eating new pine growth and such to see it through the winter. The fall moose would taste terribly resinous and piney-awful, according to him. Of course, that was Alaska, not Maine. Or perhaps people hunt moose for the trophies rather than the eating in Maine?

Mostly hunting for meat -- I don't hear of any complaints of resinous flavor. Spring moose would be rather scrawny and tough, after wintering. And Maine moose don't each much softwood -- pond plants and hardwood browse. May not have that diet available in Alaska. Ask Sarah Palin?

Which also means it's time to break out the fluorescent orange duds for outdoor activities ...

Oh, yes. Including your car.

Not that any of our Nimrods would mistake a 2-ton Ford truck for a moose . . .
