Took the window air-conditioner out and stored it.  Did not go to the further extreme of changing the screen over to storm window in that opening . . .

(added) Frost and freeze warnings for tonight, everywhere except the coast.

I'm seriously considering pulling our one window A/C unit out ans storing it for the winter, because I suspect it'd be a good deal easier to make a board bulkhead to close off the space entirely than try to actually get a draft-tight seal around the A/C unit. (The previous owners shortened the window by a foot and a half and more or less rebuilt the frame around the A/C, but not very well.)

Also, the units are pretty leaky and low-R themselves. Pull it out and put in a foam insulation sandwich made to fit, with caulked edges and some kind of weather-face.

Yeah, that's the general sort of idea I had in mind. Two sheets of plywood, say, with a couple inches of foil-faced foam between them.
