The Economist magazine reports a poll.  In which 53% of those polled in the US were in favour* of an unequivocal ban on torture.  31% supported the torture of terrorists to save lives.

I'd be interested in a similar poll of Britons. My guess is the numbers would be roughly the same.

According to the news snippet (which may be elaborated further on, but I just picked up the magazine), "The highest levels of support for an unequivocal ban were found in Spain, Britain, and France." No specific numbers given there.
