American Icons

Received my annual infusion of L.L. Bean "chamois cloth" shirts yesterday, my normal winter Business Wear.  This year's incarnation was made in El Salvador.  Previous versions were Bulgaria.  I think it has been at least a decade since they carried "Made in USA" labels...

So much for the Down Home image.

That makes me sad, too. But it's probably the price of success, the only way to meet the demand. But aren't those chamois shirt wonderful? Doug missed them, since they're way too warm for this climate.

The elbows wear out too soon -- but then, I wear them over a sweater. Oil heat, you know...

At least they're being made in one of the Americas.

Gee, I wonder if Bulgaria is too expensive for them now that the country is in the EU? The average monthly pay there is about 200 pounds (400 dollars) a month, after all. :(
