Waiting game

Still gray this morning.  Temperature still below 50F, depending on which thermometer (or web site) you consult.  Bike ride later?

Finished up a Patrick McManus book last night, first of a series of Idaho-based mysteries.  I have liked McManus humor before, and had hopes.  I'm afraid that mysteries don't play to his strength as a writer.  Only mention this because I've noticed that some other major talents seem to have difficulty switching genres.  I've loved their work in, say, SF, while their fantasy leaves me indifferent.  Don't know if the fault lies not in our stars but in ourselves...

I love CJ Cherryh's SF and can take or leave much of her fantasy, so I think that there might be a strong element of what the writer brings to the feast. (On balance, I read more fantasy than SF)

I have much the same take on Cherryh -- she's one of the ones I was thinking of, when I made that comparison. No accounting for taste, it seems.
