I have to say that the white-throated sparrows in Maine are inferior to the ones we knew in Michigan.  They sing off-key.  Specifically, their "Poor Sam Peabody Peabody Peabody" is about half a tone flat.  No idea why there's this regional difference...

I used to whistle to them out my bedroom window when I was a kid. They're not flat, they're just melancholy and angst ridden. Or maybe your Michigan WTS sing sharp! ;-)

Btw, we DO have chickadees out here in SoCal. I'd really been missing them, my little favorites, but there's a western species that sounds just the same and migrates through my yard.

Why should Maine white-throats be more melancholy and angst-ridden than their Michigan brethren? I mean, with the decline of the auto industry and all?
