Yeah, if you can't drum up enough volunteers for your war, bring on the conscripts!

As a member of that last select group (as in Selective Service...) of slaves this country drove into uniform at the point of a gun, I say Fuck You!

Sad to see this. I think LtGen Lute is a little bit nuts for even accepting the "War Czar" job, given that it's poorly defined and almost certainly doomed to become a scapegoat. I also just don't see SecDef Gates buying into the idea of a draft.

I rather suspect Lute was ordered to take the position, given that they couldn't find anybody from the civilian or retired military worlds to take it. As such, I strongly suspect that he's flying a trial balloon on the Administration's orders.

I also just don't see SecDef Gates buying into the idea of a draft.
But does he have the balls to tell Cheney and Rove to FOAD? And the political skills to make it stick?

I'm not sure he's flying a trial balloon. He might as easily be providing a place for Bush to announce strongly that no, there will not be a draft.

I heard this schmuck talking this same line on NPR yesterday. It left a cold pit in my stomach.

That's how I felt when I just now read the article. I'm too old and fat to be conscripted, but there are lots of kids our dau's age who, while too young to order a drink at a local bar, could be forced to fight or die in the Iraq quagmire, or in the next adventure to strike the fancy of George Bush's idiot son.

It's that last question that I'm hoping to see him answer in the affirmative. I'm pretty sure Gates isn't afraid to tell Cheney and Rove to stuff it.

I keep hoping the political cost will be way too high for these bozos and they'll be forced to drop it. Then again, they keep piling outrage on top of outrage...

Maybe this is what it will take to make the BushCo supporters finally sit up and PAY ATTENTION. If so, I'm tempted to say it's worth it.
