Civic virtue

Wife and I swung by the polling place on our afternoon stroll and cast ballots on the bond issues.  Umpteen millions of dollars to be applied to transportation and water-quality projects, I'd feel a lot better about the prospect if I had even the faintest wisp of a hope of a glimmer that the money would be spent wisely.  Too many past bond dollars ended up spent on deferred maintenance or paving over bad road bases...

Then there's the smoke-and-mirrors accounting where they claim that X dollars of state money will draw in two or three X dollars of federal matching funds, as if we don't pay the federal dollars out of our same wallets...

Well, we both washed our hands when we got home.

I guess the argument is that, if the fine and upstanding citizens of the great state of Maine didn't get their share of the Federal matching funds, said funds would end up frittered away by those wastrel flatlanders.

Oh, yeah, I don't have any illusions that we'd ever see that federal tax _back_ if we refused our share of it. It'd just get spent in someplace useless with a lot of voters, like Florida...
