Question for the flag-fetishists

Several times now, I've seen skydivers dropping in at events with an American flag on their rigging or on a weighted down-line.  Now, my momma taught me to never, never, never, let the flag drag on the ground.  Un-American and all that. 

How do you avoid such an event in a parachute landing?

(Such thoughts occur while biking.  Don't ask me where they come from.)

I think they've relaxed the rules since I learned them: Never let it touch the ground, never leave it out when it will get damaged, never wear it as a design on clothing, and many more.

I guess the whole issue simply proves that there are aliens living right on this planet. I don't grok the whole flag thing.

Still, I don't think Americans are the only people who worship the symbol rather than the substance...
