(no subject)

No hummingbird report so far. I suspect our tiny neighbor is perched somewhere out of the wind and rain, sitting it out in "torpor" like a wise bird. They have to have evolved strategies for this, because we have this kind of siege every year.

If you routinely host hummingbirds, you might look into getting a roost box. I've started to see those for various species in recent years. They look like birdhouses but the hole is at the bottom and there are perches inside. It seems like a useful feature for hummingbirds.

They're extremely territorial. They tend to find a spot that they like and then inhabit it very stubbornly.

*ponder* Which means that hummingbird roostboxes would need to be small and scattered, rather than the bigger ones for flocking birds like finches.
