Nonetheless, if you're doing something that you know is going to greatly increase your exposure level, it might make a difference. I was about to suggest the same.
Writing back to say, "We're sorry you won't be here, we'd really been looking forward to seeing you" (and perhaps asking when a visit might be arranged) would have been polite. But I agree, writing to ask them to reconsider sounds uncomfortably like fishing for gifts.
