Air temperature 55 F, light easterly breeze, cloudy. Scattered showers stalk the land, threatening my hopes for a bike ride this morning. Just one of the myriad ways in which the world refuses to accommodate my needs.

One dead turtle, right-side up this time, so the rough brown back IDs it as a young snapper even though it was painted-turtle size. Also one small bird, all I can say is that it was brown.

First roses seen out in the bog. They get mowed every summer, which slows them down. Calla still blooming in a pool by one of the culverts. Lots of red and white clover on the roadside, plus maybe hop-clover. Mullein starting to send up flower spikes, milkweed stalks and leaves but no flowers yet, water-parsnip starting to open. I don't think I've mentioned them yet, but we also are growing a fine crop of tent caterpillars and poison ivy.

Got out on the bike, mockingbird song at several locations, no geese in the cemetery. Rain was showing across town on the weather radar but all I had to contend with was gusty wind. Did not die.

Squirrels haven't won yet. As of this morning, catbird was still sitting on the nest.
