Air temperature 30 F, wind NW about 10 mph, clear sky for the first time in living memory. Or anyway, a couple of days. It won't last.

Sound clues tell me that the city's diesel-powered vacuum-cleaner is now sucking up leaves on the next street.  Per municipal policy, this rite of autumn must wait until snow and ice freeze their prey solid on the roadsides.  We now have the requisite conditions.
