Grumblegrump morning

Icy surfaces, air temperature 27 F, wind northwest about 5 mph, fog. Started to walk for the newspaper, considered the traction, and came back to take the car. City has worked on the roads but not the sidewalks.

Grumblegrump, part two

We had a "situation" upriver last night, four men trapped in a grounded boat in the middle of the river. Reasons as to *why* they were out in a boat in the dark in a snowstorm remain sketchy. Anyway successful helicopter rescue by the USCG, coasties doing what they do. The USCG is an example of what government could and should be. They are not my grump.

But that chopper came from Cape Cod. Due to budget cuts by assholes in D. C., the Coast Guard pulled their last helicopters out of Maine years ago. When minutes count, help is only an hour or so away . . .
