Tuesday no-roadkill report

Well, the heron corpse has vanished. The cemetery crew does keep neat grounds. One of Sunday's raccoons still lies spurned in the middle of the road, though.

Not-roadkill -- saw a muskrat in the cattails again. Not that easy, spotting a wet mud-colored rat in wet mud...

Gray morning, started with light drizzle but dried off enough that I got my ride in. This technically brings me to 1200 miles for the year, but still a little short of that number on the odometer so it kinda sorta doesn't count.

Cool, low 60s F, with a breeze. Incentive to pedal faster. And more leaves are turning. Ash trees going yellow, some of the maples beginning to show color outside of the swamps.

Carnival

A lot of noise, both in writerly circles on LJ and in the private SFWA news groups, about events that may have occurred at the WorldCon last weekend. I wasn't there, don't know any of the persons involved, and at least some of them haven't made public statements.

If the allegations are true, they would constitute simple assault and sexual assault under Maine law, and the latter could land you on the sex offender registry.

But that ain't what I'm talking about.

F/SF Cons have a long reputation as wild parties. More generally, _conventions_ have a long reputation as wild parties. See "Shriners" -- hell, even AIA conventions come under the old "Carnival" exemption, where civilized behavior gets forgotten. A former boss used to drink far beyond the legal limit and then drive home. Wrecked his car at least once, I refused to travel with him unless _I_ was driving, etc.

As I said, Carnival. Widespread perception that rules are suspended. That's one reason why I have never gone to Cons -- I'm not good with crowds of strangers or with public drunks. Crowds of drunken strangers? No thanks.

This weekend's music festival stretched my limits. I'm not a Carnival person.
