Cut-and-paste from Baen's Bar:

Dear Friends of Jim Baen and Baen Books,

At this time we regret we are unable to give you positive news regarding Jim's condition.

As many of you know, last Monday Jim suffered a stroke. The doctors describe it as a massive bilateral stroke in the thalamus. Jim has not regained consciousness and his condition has become severe. He is resting comfortably now, and appears to be in no pain; however the doctors' prognosis is grave.

We know that very many people care for Jim and have been hoping and praying for a positive outcome, but we wanted to share this information with you, as so many have asked and expressed great concern.

My own editorial comment: Oh, _crap_!

No fresh roadkill. Some of the well-aged roadkill has mellowed in the June sun enough that you can track it a hundred yards downwind...

Hazy, hot, humid. I decided that I am _not_ elderly or lung-impaired and went for a bike ride anyway. The knee has not lodged a complaint with the shop steward. Yet.

Nothing particular new to report on the route -- same daisies, lupines, hawkweed, and roses. The golf course has dried out enough for the little-white-ball crowd to get their butts back into golf carts.

Another few nits picked out of SIGNATURES. Three or four more chapters to do and I'll sew the thing together into a single file, let it sit until after we get back from the Mazel Tov Wedding of Doom, reread it to find out how dreadful it looks at that point, and then chuck it in the mail to the Nice Agent Lady.
