Woodchuck, painted turtle, muskrat. The woodchuck was almost black -- I thought it was a black cat with path-crossing luck backfired, until I got close enough to get the head-shape sorted out. Our woodchucks vary a lot in coat color -- browns from almost black to almost blond, and gray with nearly as much range.

Got out riding earlier than usual, but took an easier (and shorter) route than I'd planned out of deference to That Damned Knee. We'll see what penalty I pay in the next few days. And I got my annual reminder to _never_ try a new route on the bike without first scouting it by car. Found an unpaved section of about two miles in the middle of the Kirkland Road, I thought for _sure_ they'd finished that a couple of years back. Not fun on a road bike with narrow tires.

Lots of lupines blooming, almost fully open to the ends of their flower spikes now, and a wide selection of wild and cultivated roses. Usual suspects in the fields and roadside ditches. Speaking of ditches, the bullfrogs are going glug glug and making impressive splashes when I startle them into jumping.

Maybe some more poking at SIGNATURES this afternoon.
