Astronomical observations
Dec. 21st, 2005 08:27 amWinter solstice around here, temperature this morning about 5 F (-15 C). "As the days grow longer, the cold grows stronger."
We will probably bring in the mini-tree from my workshop and decorate it today, once the water in the base thaws enough to allow adjustment to local vertical -- nothing in this house is level or square (including the occupants.) That will make this balsam a Solstice Tree, to be followed by incarnations as a Christmas Tree, a Hanukkah Bush, and a New Year's Tree before becoming mulch at the city landfill....
We tried to skip such rites for a year or two, once Elder and Younger Sons vacated, and Certain People objected. And we have some Victorian ornaments that really should see the light of day every few years, anyway. No, I didn't keep the tin-plated Xmas-tree candle-holders we found in the basement while cleaning out Mom's house.
