Shadbush and asparagus
May. 21st, 2005 12:47 pmAnd clouds. Forecast gives us rain, showers, clouds, and more rain for the next five days. Beyond that, the weather-prophets refuse to venture.
Shadbush blooming along the bike route this morning, delicate white flowers in the fresh pale green of new leaves. "Shadbush" gets its name from blooming while the shad are running in the river, an event of the long-ago when we had shad in the rivers around here. The (small) tree is also called "Juneberry" for the obvious reason.
Anyway, got out for a ride this morning even though the temperature sulked in the low 50s F and I had to slog into a 10-15 mph wind for the first ten miles. Looked like the last chance for X days, so I took it. Upriver to the next bridge, then down the opposite side and home.
Fresh asparagus and smoked sausage for lunch, first asparagus of the spring from our back yard. Which tells you things are running late around here.
