The price must be paid...
May. 13th, 2005 10:54 amWell, Maine voted Democratic in the last election, and our senators, tho Republican, refuse to "heel" on command. Ergo, the naval shipyard down in Kittery gets closed.
ETA:
Yet more fun, after the first press release. Turns out that Brunswick Naval Air Station, while not closed, will be "realigned" into mothball status. This is the last active-duty air base in New England. All aircraft and squadrons will move to Florida, while the base remains "open." This is actually worse than closing, as if the base were closed, it could be redeveloped for civilian use....
And the Defense Finance Accounting Center, all civilian jobs and a major chunk of the workforce in a _former_ air force base up in Aroostook County (read "Canada") will close.
Hey, the good news to all this is, we don't need to sweat the next round. Maine won't have _any_ federal bases left to close. All the stuff still here will be National Guard.
