Feathers are funny things
Mar. 15th, 2005 11:01 amMale cardinal in the tree out front this morning, sun angle _just_ right to make him glow like a scarlet tanager. Feather color comes mostly from home-grown diffraction grids, AKA feather scales, rather than dyes, so the lighting becomes critical for best effect. (Lady cardinal was out back under the sunflower feeder, apparently not impressed by all the work he put into his display. Women can be like that....)
A couple of inches of new snow overnight, but melting quickly. I got out on the trail at the city forest as early as possible -- got to make use of the fresh stuff. Spent about a mile and a half of the run being chased by a german shorthair running loose. It wanted to play. And since that's a hunter breed, it wanted to play out _ahead_ of its master, who finally caught up with me and passed. No more playing chicken on the downslopes.
