Well, every once in a while it happens. Fearless Leader said something the other day that I found reasonable and congruent with my understanding of the World As It Is. He said that we couldn't "win" the war on terrorism. But apparently the image-doctors thought that statement sucked, so they've retracted it. Now we _can_ win the war on terror.
Now, don't get me wrong. I think we have to _fight_ terror. But Israel has been fighting terror for fifty years now, and the lack of victory is splattered all over the newspapers on a daily basis. It's called "asymmetrical warfare." Even in a small space, like the Balkans, millions of people have to work together to create peace. Ten or twenty people can create war. Or consider dollars -- millions or billions to deliver one US cruise missile to target. How much does a "Palestinian Smart Bomb" cost? I mean, beyond the life of the car-bomb driver? The truck or car is usually stolen....
I remember me a SF story of some years back, where the viewpoint character was walled up inside his apartment in the name of safety. Door welded shut. But even that wouldn't work in the World As It Is.
We can't eliminate terrorism, even in a lock-down police state. We can lower the threat level somewhat. But apparently the voting public isn't cleared for that level of classified information.
