Pouring money down a rathole

Well, the crew started on our basement this morning, removing asbestos pipe insulation in preparation for foundation repairs. I dearly _hate_ throwing large sums of money into projects that will show no visible effect. I mean, when we get through with all this, we'll have the same house we started out with....

Sort of like paying taxes, I guess.
