So, then, is this a book I can safely give to my nephews and niece (ranging in age upwards from 13) for Christmas?

Depends on how comfortable you are with nephews and niece getting a lesbian "love interest." This one isn't as graphic on either the sex or the violence, and the central characters don't use "fucking" as a universal adjective. There is, however, enough nastiness to maintain tension.

Since I'm not Steve King, the good guys win. Sorta. For sufficiently flexible definitions of "good guys."
