In addition to the contretemps in yesterday's email, this computer has been playing silly buggers. Downloaded an update to AVG yesterday, and the system reboot it demanded dumped me into safe mode without audio drivers and with a 640x480 display (or whatever the correct numbers are -- I forget.) After assorted futzing around, I now have sound and display corrected, but Elder Son should be stopping by for in-house tech support later. I still have a few questions for him, like why an AVG scan now can't read the boot sector, while everything still boots up correctly and Scandisk can't find any problems.

Next computer may be a Mac. But I'd earmarked the first advance payment on GHOST POINT for an upgrade to the household IT department (this is a Win98 machine and over 7 years old) and we all know how _that_ theory worked out.

Ulcers, anyone?

Could be worse -- could be WinME. I believe that OS may be why Elder Son got into tech support.

WIn98 drove me absolutely insane - it would crash three or four times a day, and sometimes I'd lose a few paragraphs of stuff and sometimes pages and pages of it. I switched to Win2000, which was better, and then with this new computer I got XP. But mention 98 and I still come out in hives...

Win98 has been much more stable than that for me -- but I don't do anything that stresses the system. Most of the crashes went away when I switched from IE to Firefox. Funniest thing....

The laptop has XP, which more or less works. But downloading multi-megabyte patches over dialup is getting a bit tiresome.
