Hey, I knew that the batteries in both of my UPS units were dead. One, Trip-lite, serves the laptop, basically as a line filter, and doesn't have a replaceable battery. The other, APC, _is_ "user serviceable" but was an "I'll get around to replacing that someday."

Well, yesterday that latter unit started imitating power outages on its own. I guess it requires at least minimal battery to function. So today I bought a new, larger capacity, unit with more outlets. Maybe I'll even order a new battery for the APC unit....

What size APC? I have a 450. We also have the smart APC's at our Alaska ground station and use their web capability to power-cycle items that get hung up.

There's a place down in Texas, IIRR, Alaric knows for sure, that has APC batteries at a lower cost than APC. I'll have him comment when I get home.

The one I replaced is a "BackUPS 450" and is rather old -- I acquired it used in the bankruptcy yard sale of a local company. Even so, it outlasted that damned Trip-Lite. _That_ company _used_ to make good stuff...

The new APC is a 650 unit, mainly because that provided more outlets rather than the increased run-time.

I'd appreciate the info, although I may go with the APC site's "Trade UPS" program and update the hardware as well as the battery.

They don't do the trade UPS program however they have reconditioned UPSes at very good prices and generally have several models on sale, varying by what they have overstocked at the moment.

Easier for me to take dictation than to get him to comment. :-)

I have no idea what you're talking about.

But the name Trip-Lite seems fascinating.

UPS = "Uninterruptable Power Supply." They provide a few minutes of battery back-up in case of commercial power outages, allowing you to shut your computer down in a dignified fashion. They also provide "power conditioning" functions, smoothing out voltage fluctuations and filtering transient spikes.
