Ban the Fighting Irish?

If the Fighting Illini and Fighting Sioux represent ethnic slurs, why does Notre Dame get a free pass? And I request, nay, _demand_, that you folks drop "hooligan" from your vocabularies, blighting as it does a fine old Irish family name. For that matter, henceforth, no one shall be called "Bohemian" without ancestry (at least 1/8) from the ancient Kingdom of Bohemia.

On to the Sunday roadkill report. One fresh skunk in the middle of US 1A, welcoming the rusticators to Scenic Maine, and one dead canid so torn up and squashed that I couldn't tell if it was dog, fox, or coyote. On the other hand, I managed to bomb down Copland Hill without encountering a deer in the middle of the road. Top speed 41.3 mph.

Spent some time out at the nature center, watching hummingbirds fight over the feeders. Vicious beasts, and _very_ possessive.

Good ride. I'm currently a bit sunburned from yesterday's 30 mile romp around central Maryland. Some people would have enough sense to build up gradually to such a thing after a 5 year haitus.

Bluntly, because the Irish count as white. With the evisceration of history teaching over the past 40 years, no one remembers (or wants to remember, which is more important) the blatant anti-Irish bigotry of the late 19th and early 20th century. That sort of thing doesn't happen in America, y'know.

Russ and Blair took a 25-mile ride yesterday; today Russ was pleasantly surprised to discover that his legs didn't hurt at all. But then, he has been getting back into it gradually. And he says he's heading back toward 36"-waist territory, which is the minimum he wants to achieve before trying to reconstitute some of the Outrageous Outfits which have suffered from age.

i'd be offended but i really don't care...there is WAY too much time and energy being spent by the board of trustees on this issue...they could solve the problem and save a ton of money by getting rid of the atheletic department totally.

[i have lived and worked in champaign since 1983 and i grew up in "fighting illini" country. i'm not a fan of orange and blue as a color combination, but i was tickled pink that the illini got into the finals in basketball.
