Unfortunate metaphor

Okay, so (paraphrased), our new Fearless Leader-Elect says, "It will take us a long time to dig ourselves out of this hole..."

One of the basic rules of life, taught to me by Dad many years ago, was, "You find yourself in a deep hole, son, the first thing you do is STOP DIGGING!"

Kinda true. If you're in a big ditch, and can't climb out, you have to dig your way out by creating a ramp to the surface.

I'm not sure that "ditch" = "hole" in common usage.
