Welcome to Ickday

I always figure that if I break a sweat walking for the morning newspaper, the omens are grim.

Another day in the 80s F, with high humidity and "unhealthy" air quality, the latter a gift from all you helpful people upwind.  Hell, we're probably showing particulate pollution from the California fires by now.  One of the joys of living in the tailpipe of America.

At least we don't have thick haze from forest fires in Quebec this year.  Yet.

You got that right. My omen was watching the emergence of three dog-vomit slime molds in my garden beds: they only emerge when they have a likelihood of hot, dry days for at least three weeks. (The slime molds reproduce by spores, so the fruiting bodies have to dry out before they can be spread. This means at least two weeks of serious heat to dry each collective to the proper consistency, so that when they get hit with rain, they explode. I hit one with a garden hose once after it had dried, and the resultant spore cloud looked like the smoke from burning tires.) I don't have much hope that this summer is going to be anything other than More of the Same.

Wife thinks that slime molds may inherit the earth.
