Katahdin is about a mile high. Some hikers look at that and think it is a minor peak. However, it is remote and rugged, sometimes called a rockpile from all the glacial debris. All the trails are strenuous. It and the White Mountains in neighboring New Hampshire are noted for dangerous weather.
