Part of that decision comes down to the "It's not a bug, it's a feature" argument -- detective noir fiction has a different set of conventions than fantasy, and while this book _is_ fantasy, I've shoved it firmly into the other set of genre conventions.

I can see it appealing to readers outside genre, it very much had that feel. I think it's good to gather reactions - the only person you need to listen to is your editor...
