Latest dispatch from the hyphen wars
I am afraid that "down east" does not carry the same flavor and flow as "down-east." And the latter usage does, indeed, reside in my dictionary.
That is all. Move along.

Heck, the hyphen is fine but I'd even be willing to write that one as downeast, or to talk about downeasters. I wouldn't separate the two words completely though.

"Downeast" is common usage. However, I'm not gonna push it.
