Wary eye to the sky

Elder Son stopped by yesterday evening, requesting a ride back to his apartment after work. So I finished supper and we headed across town just as some ugly clouds moved in and started to spit rain and lightning.

Coming back, there's this place with a panorama out to the horizon, and some of those clouds were getting lumpy on the bottom. Maine doesn't go in for tornados, as a general rule, but I've lived in Michigan and Illinois and Georgia, prime twister country. Those clouds looked familiar. Wouldn't have taken much more energy to turn _really_ interesting.

Rainbow afterward, sunshine and cooler this morning.

Actually...
while watching the radar views/storm information available on Weather Underground ( see http://www.wunderground.com ) there was a 5 or 10 minute stretch where "tornado signature" was showing up on the map.

Here, we had a lot of lightning, including some nearby ground strikes, a good bit of wind, and heavy rain. We turned off the computers and the air conditioner and watched for a half hour or 45 minutes; the temperature fell from 88 to 72 pretty darned fast... they promised chance of hail, but we didn't see any.

Really, next "bonus" I get, I'm putting in a weather station...

We just had our first Hurricaine Warning for the season. No damage here. But unixronin's parents in Spokane, WA had a freak windstorm that took out a tree and nearly took them out as well. They were going to sit out on the patio and have their tea when they decided it was too windy and dusty outside and right after they turned away from the door to the patio the tree came down and flattened the table and chairs they would have been sitting at.
