I might say the same thing, even seeing the comments discussed, mocked, etc., because of the importance if viewed literally.

"If you do not show happy approval of THIS MAN, then you are making war on the US, or giving aid and comfort to its enemies."

That's a powerfully horrifying statement, and not at all unexpected from someone who can threaten a political opponent with baseless criminal charges, but, it was treated as "eh, dems, what a bunch of fartknockers"

Okay, probably something less ridiculous than "fartknockers". But the point is your second paragraph: yes, this is how far we are from "normal".
