Have you considered using the deerfly patches that you put on the back of your hat? Lee Valley has them - and apparently they work well.

LiveJournal spellcheck and I have ongoing issues - it really doesn't like contractions or British spelling. I just pat it gently and say "there, there - you'll learn ..."
